Making a Choice between Yoga and Pilates- A Comparison

Yoga and Pilates are the two most popular ways of working out, and their popularity is increasing day by day. As workout methods, both of them have a lot to offer to their practitioners. However, the only problem is that people do not know which one to choose. Here are a few points to consider while opting for any of the two.

Pilates

As compared to yoga , which has been a part of the Indian civilization for at least two thousand years, Pilates is a new entrant. It emerged only in the twentieth century. It was devised as a physical conditioning system. Its main area of focus was the development of the core of the body. In this sense, it is somewhat similar to yoga.

The similarities of Pilates with yoga end thereafter. While yoga promotes a healthy lifestyle there is no such insistence in a Pilates-based program. The outright focus of the program is on training the physical body of the trainee. As a result, it has been utilised by all those whose needs are specifically physical (like dancers).

Quite unlike the benefits attained through yoga , Pilates provides only endurance training, and training of the core and muscles. This results in strong back muscles and rock hard abs, resulting in an improved flexibility and posture.

Yoga

Yoga has been around for at least two millennia. It has been widely practiced by ascetic 'yogis' (hermits) in the Indian subcontinent in order to attain a spiritual union with one's inner self. Further, it is not merely a type of workout schedule but also a way of life. Special emphasis is laid upon elements of lifestyle (such as nutrition). Probably this is the reason why some religions across the world are seeing practice of yoga as a heresy.

Its spiritual component set aside, yoga is an excellent method of workout. The unique thing about it is that it focuses on all the major as well as minor muscles in the body. Further, it is also beneficial in the treatment of various bodily deformities and problems. As a result, yoga can help in therapeutic treatment of ailments such as stress, sciatica, menstruation discomforts, mild depression and others.

Yoga training allows one to improve his/her sense of balance. Endurance training is imparted in a completely unique sense- through teaching breathing techniques. Special emphasis is laid upon proper and unhindered breathing in order to complete the pose. This eventually results in powerful lungs which can breathe systematically for a longer duration of time. And as we all know, correct breathing is imperative for a healthy lifestyle.

There are innumerable poses in a yoga training program. These are meant for practitioners from all walks of life. These poses can be performed by teenagers as well as those in the old age. Quite unlike Pilates, there is something for everybody in a yoga training schedule.
