There are both similarities and differences between Pilates and Yoga. Both of them help us to manage stress and help us to reduce it. Both of them help us to equitable distribute the residual stresses in the body. Both are what are known as mind body programs and both are slower than normal run of the mill gym or home callisthenic exercises.
Although the above form some of the notable similarities between Pilates and Yoga, you will find that there are still important differences between them. You will find that Pilates has a stricter method of performing a set of repetitive exercise routines, whereas Yoga has a perfectly flexible and loose structure.
You will find that in the case of Pilates you need to perform a certain move exactly in the stipulated manner and in the precise order. Yoga gives you plenty of leeway in exactly these aspects. Pilates is more suitable for inherently disciplined individuals, whereas in Yoga the stress is more on devotion and dedication to the performance of the postures and exercises. Yogic practice of Pranayama breathing exercises, meditation, and postures leaves the order of performance entirely up to you.
So, people who want to obtain the substantial health benefits of yoga without sacrificing discipline at the altar get the desired flexibility. Yoga stresses substantially on mind control. This component is not so relevant in Pilates, although discipline aspects are very much required to adhere to the Pilates exercise routine. Moreover, Yoga stresses more on gradually providing flexibility to muscles and joints without unduly stressing them. In the case of Pilates, the emphasis is more on building up of muscle tone.
Moreover, Yoga destresses you much more effectively than Pilates can ever do. The latter is for developing your core physical strength. It is a sort of powerbuilder. But, Yoga is more a way of life that is having a comparatively more permanent nature than Pilates is. Pilates is what you will do for attaining physical strength, but Yoga will help build endurance in you. Pilates are good for physical workouts, but Yoga rejuvenates all three, your body, your mind, and your spirit too.
For doing Pilates exercises you need to be in a comparatively better health and younger people tend to focus on it much better than old people. Yoga leaves a person free from any such age related or health related bottlenecks. The learning curve for Pilates is comparatively steeper than it is for Yoga.
Finally, one of the starkest differences between performing Pilates and performing Yoga is that the former appears binding. In the case of Yoga, performing Sun salutations or doing Namaste Yoga or postures is so much fun too.
