Relationship between Yoga and Sleep
Yoga is a form of exercise that targets not just one’s body but also one’s mind. With the help of chanting, meditation and other similar exercises, yoga allows our mind to rid itself of many forms of anxieties. This allows us to sleep properly, deeply and for a long period of time.

Proper sleep is essential for our well-being. It is during sleep that our body recuperates from the wear and tear that it undergoes during the day. Further, sleep also ensures that our senses get proper rest so that when they are next used, they respond spontaneously. Hence, we all should sleep sufficiently each day so that we remain physically and mentally fit.

However, with our daily lives becoming increasingly hectic, we are not able to sleep properly. Work related stress and anxiety, coupled with problems of our personal lives, has taken an immense toll on the way we sleep. Now we no longer sleep at a stretch, for at least 8 hours a day. Instead, we sleep irregularly for short periods of time. We sleep on our breakfast table, in the train, in the office, and even inside the office toilet. All this does not bode well for our personal and professional life.

In order to cure sleeping irregularities, yoga can be taken. Now yoga is not simply a method of exercising that stretches and strengthens our core group muscles. It is also a way of life that teaches us how to live in a healthy manner.

The most important teaching of yoga is the idea of contentment, of being happy and satisfied with that which we have. By emphasizing upon the idea of contentment, yoga allows the mind to take its worries off aggrandizement. Instead of persistently hoarding things up, it asks us to enjoy them to the fullest and be content with this enjoyment.

Further, yoga brings us closer to our selves. It helps us improve our self through introspection, self-reflection. This allows us to iron out our flaws and be more affirmative in our day to day life. Once that happens, we are able to prevail over the situation around us and this eventually helps us sleep properly.

Finally, yoga helps us come closer to God, the ultimate source of peace. By musically chanting the name of God, yoga arranges for a direct experience of the presence of God. For many people, this type of an experience is very soothing and relaxing. The effect remains for a very long time too. This brings them an overall sense of mental peace which helps them sleep properly.

Yoga is not just a practice of series of asanas. It is also a spiritual healing exercise that affects us deep inside our brains. It calms us down and helps us sleep more regularly and for long periods of time.
