The best results towards carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) cure are achieved with medication and simultaneously doing certain Yoga exercises. However, it is most important that the Yoga exercises be performed under the supervision of a qualified physician and a trained Yoga master. This is because doing certain other Yoga exercises can result in aggravating the injury to the CTS affected wrist.
Yoga helps in improving the CTS condition by providing various benefits. One of the many benefits that Yoga provides in CTS is that it opens, stretches, and strengthens the wrists’ tendons. It also improves posture. It thereby provides added flexibility to tendons, nerves, ligaments, and joints. Thereby the tendons’ cross-sectional area is also reduced.
This ultimately helps in reduction of pressure on the median nerve that is the primary mechanism of pain occurrence in CTS. The pressure reduction is facilitated because of more leeway in the movement of the tendons within the carpal tunnel. The result is automatically less pain.
Yoga facilitates improved breathing and thus facilitates the reaching of more oxygen to the affected area. More oxygen means more strength to the tissues that helps heal the injury to the carpal tunnel ligament.
Other benefits of Yoga include improved blood circulation to the affected wrist. The blood circulation system carries oxygen to the cells and tissues of the body. Yoga facilitates improvement in the overall blood circulation. Thereby the rate of oxygen flow to the affected tissues in CTS is enhanced. It facilitates faster healing of the damaged carpal tunnel ligament.
The other main benefit of doing Yoga is that it improves mental strength, stress management skills, and endurance to fight illnesses such as carpal tunnel syndrome. Yoga is therefore preferred over exercise forms in the attempt towards a cure of CTS.
Moreover, Yoga is the gentlest form of exercising. When done properly it does not pose any side effects at all. You just need to strike a certain pose and that too for a very short duration.
The striking fact about Yoga is that it can be used to stay fitter by people of all ages. This advantage is not at all available with other strenuous exercise forms. The other important benefit of Yoga is that it is so enjoyable especially when done as a group of people. When you do anything that you enjoy, it automatically provides important health benefits to your body, mind and to your spirit.
Another hitherto unknown facet of Yoga’s benefits in CTS is that had you been already doing Yoga, most probably you would not have been affected by it at all. This is very much true unless if you were predisposed congenitally towards CTS.
However, it is important to remember that Yoga is by itself not a cure for CTS. It is not a replacement for CTS medication. You need to also regularly take the medication specifically prescribed for you by your doctor. Yoga only strives to accelerate the rate of recovery from CTS.
