Yoga asanas, apart from strengthening major muscles of the body, can also be used to treat problems of the digestive tract. As a matter of fact, most yoga poses help increase the metabolic rate of the body which in turn results in an improved digestive system. Apart from digestive problems, yoga asanas also help in controlling liver problems, menstrual problems and skin diseases as well.
Amongst all yoga poses, Pranayama is considered to be the best healer of digestive problems. By correcting the breathing pattern, the asana helps to increase the rate of oxygen supplied in the body. This in turn ensures an increased metabolic rate. The food inside out stomach, then, gets digested easily.
Apart from Pranayama, there are other Yogasanas that can be done in order to rid the body of various digestive problems. Some of the asanas that can be done are pawanmuktasana, vajrasana, shankhaprakshalana, mayurasana, bhujangasana, paschimottanasana, shalabhasana, shavasana, sarvangasana and matsyendrasana.
Amongst all these asanas, vajrasana can be performed 10 minutes after having a meal. Further, it would be advisable to perform the above mentioned asanas only after one has perfected the art of doing pawanmuktasana. Once this pose is learned, the remaining can be done after it on a daily basis.
It is to be noted that doing Yogasanas alone will not rid the body of digestive problems. In fact, the best way to rid the body of such ailments is through removing the very reasons which cause the ailment in the first place. By this we mean that it is better to keep our food consuming habits under a check.
Following are some elementary rules that should guide your food consuming habits. If you follow them then half your problems will be taken care of right at the beginning.
1. Avoid eating raw, uncooked vegetables. The fiber inside them is too strong for the body’s digestive tract.
2. Vegetables should be consumed only after they are cooked properly. Ideally, boiled vegetables are the best but you can cook them just a bit further. However, avoid over cooking at all costs.
3. Eat a diet of only simple foods. Stay away from deep-fried foods. The high amount of oil inside these foods can take a long time to digest inside your body. Even otherwise, they are unhealthy for your heart.
4. Never over eat. Eat only that much which satisfies your hunger. Even if you like a particular dish, try to stop once your stomach is full. Also, ensure that you eat your meals at the right time. Avoid anything in between.
5. Try to go for a detox diet at least once a week. On this day, do not eat anything. Instead, consume only some water and salt so that the fluid levels inside the body are maintained.
