There are different paths (margas) of yoga that can be taken in order to unite with the divine energy. For example, an active person can realize his divinity through work and duty (Karma), a religious person through devotion (Bhakti), an intellectual person through knowledge (Gyana). A meditative or reflective person can attain divine energy through Yoga.
The different types of yoga share some common elements. Some focus more on breathing exercises and postures, whereas others focus more on spirituality. Each type emphasizes a particular path that comprises a certain set of beliefs, practices, and rituals. The types of yoga constitute a ladder, from the lowest form of Hatha yoga, with its focus on physical exercise and breathing techniques, to the highest form known as Raja yoga, or union by mastering human emotions.
There are various types of yoga such as Bhakti Yoga, Hatha Yoga, Jnana Yoga, Karma Yoga, Kundalini Yoga, Mantra Yoga, Purna Yoga and Raj Yoga.
Hatha yoga is the foundation of all yoga systems. Hatha yoga is a preparation for higher forms of yoga. The syllable Ha means sun and tha means moon. Thus, Hatha yoga refers to positive (sun) and negative (moon) energies in the universe. These energies have to be balanced and mastered so that the vital force or prana can be regulated, the mind cleared and super-conscious state be attained. The ideal way to practice and learn the asanas of Hatha yoga is to practice in a calm, meditative mood. Do not overdo the asanas.
Apart from Hatha yoga, other prominent types of yoga are Bhakti Yoga, Jnana Yoga, Karma Yoga, Kundalini Yoga, Mantra Yoga, Purna Yoga and Raja Yoga. Though all the above Yoga styles are popular, Kundalini Yoga is the most sought after in the west. Different yoga types have their unique virtues. Some yoga styles are meant to obtain physical strength whereas others help to increase mental prowess.
Bhakti yoga emphasizes love and devotion. Jnana yoga highlights the use of the mind to surpass the mind. Karma yoga lays emphasis on selfless action and service. Kundalini Yoga uses sexual experience as a means to enlightenment and knowledge. As per Mantra Yoga meditation one has to chant a word or a phrase until he or she transcends mind and emotions. Purna yoga lays more emphasis on the importance of karma in day to day life. Raja yoga provides solution for complete and holistic healing.
