Postpartum yoga is a great way to lose all the weight that you have gained during pregnancy. But, before you resume your yoga practice, there are a few basic rules of postpartum yoga that you must know.
Wait for the right time You obviously cannot start your yoga practice soon after you have delivered the child. Your body needs some time before it is ready for another yoga practice. Ideally, doctors advice six weeks of complete rest in case of vaginal delivery before you can resume your yoga. The time span is a little bit longer in case of cesarean births. Also, make sure that you do not have any significant bleeding before you get back to your yoga practice.
Tell your teacher It is important for your teacher to know that you have just had a baby. This is because the body of a woman is a little fragile after delivery. So, it could be difficult to practice slightly difficult poses. Yoga teachers typically advise simple and easy poses for mothers of newborn babies.
Listen to your body We know that you want to lose weight that you have put on in the onslaught of pregnancy. But, don't just get swayed away by your weight loss goals. Listen to your body. If a particular body part is hurting during a particular pose, you could ask your teacher for a simple variation of the pose. Or you might as well skip the pose all together.
Don't push yourself too hard Take it slow. It is not necessary for you to practice yoga for an hour daily just because you want to lose weight. Do not overstrain yourself. You may skip your yoga session once in a while if you are not feeling too comfortable.
Know your constraints After pregnancy, your body develops some kind of physical constraints. For instance, if you are breastfeeding, you may find it difficult to practice poses that squash the chest. So, do not force your body into doing these poses.
Stop thinking of what you could do before your delivery Most of the times, women are always stuck thinking about the poses they could do before they had delivered the child. It is important that you stop thinking about the x, y and z poses that you cannot practice now. You need to understand that your body has undergone turmoil of sorts and it does not have the same power now.
Be patient It will take some time before you are able to get back to your normal yoga session. Understand that your body needs time to recover and get back to normal. Be patient and gradually progress from one yoga stage to the other.
