Iyengar Yoga for Beginners as well as Professionals
Iyengar yoga is a form of hatha yoga which was created by B.K.S Iyengar. Its uniqueness lies in the fact that this type of yoga uses a lot of props (such as belts and blocks) while performing yogasanas.

Its Traditional Roots
Iyengar developed this type of yoga by incorporating the teachings of Patanjali (enumerated in the Yoga Sutras) about the eight limbs of yoga with the existing proficiency levels of practitioners (hence the props).

Its Objectives
This type of yoga then emphasises on the development of stamina, strength, flexibility and balance but also helps those whose body is not yet able to withstand the stretching and resistance which yoga poses entail. It also works towards developing ability to concentrate (Dharana) and meditate (Dhyana) in practitioners.

The eventual objective of this type of asana is to promote for health and well-being through a unification of body, mind and spirit. It also acts as a great stress buster.

How is it to be done?
Iyengar yoga is not like a gym class in which specific exercises can be performed in a random order (or even skipped). Students have to follow the verbal instructions given in a yoga class and the mistakes which they make are actively pointed out and corrected.

The key thing to be observed while performing Iyengar yoga is perfect body alignment. While this is easy for those who have done years of practice, those who have just begun with yoga or are in the intermediate stage need some sort of support. Hence, Iyengar pioneered the use of props such as belts, blocks, cushions and straps to help novice and intermediate practitioners attain that perfect body alignment.

Iyengar yoga focuses more on standing poses. This helps in building strong legs which then increases blood circulation and the body's vitality. Practitioners are also able to improve balance and coordination. This helps the body to prepare itself for the more advanced poses to follow.

Iyengar yoga is a process of learning which is both rigorous and extensive. It takes two years of rigorous learning to get the introductory certificate. Another decade or so may be required to complete subsequent advanced and intermediate and senior levels.

For whom is it Beneficial?
Iyengar yoga is meant for everybody. It promotes health and well-being. And quite unlike other type of exercises wherein an ailment hampers your exercise routine, Iyengar yoga can be utilised to treat numerous ailments, disorders and diseases. As a matter of fact, there are poses devised to treat specific disorders in the body.

Where can I find teachers of Iyengar yoga?
It is not difficult to find a Iyengar yoga teacher. However, the chances are that they might not be there in your immediate neighbourhood. Because of the amount of patience and dedication which is required to learn this type of yoga, the number of teachers available is limited. However, those who are there are well versed in their job. You can search on the internet to find one.
