Mayura means peacock. The Peacock Pose or Mayurasana is so named because in the final steps of the asana, the individual performing it resembles the standing position of a peacock. It is said that as a peacock eats the serpents and even then the venom does not affect it in any way, the person performing this pose becomes resistant to most of the health problems.
It is a very beneficial pose for people suffering from digestive problems as it helps improve the digestive system.
Steps of the Peacock Pose * Place the palms on the ground and kneel with the knees about 12 inches apart. * Your fingers should point towards your feet. * Sit on the knees and now bend forward. * Place both the elbows on either side of the navel, as you inhale. * Now the weight of the entire body is on the elbows as you stretch the legs. * Lift the face and the legs in the rear. You are to keep them in parallel above the ground. Your head and legs are at level. * Continue to breathe lightly and try to stay in this position. * To return, put the feet on the ground, revert to the original position, rest and relax in the Shithilasan pose.
Don't force yourself at any stage of the Asana and avoid jerks. If you fail at any particular stage, return to the initial pose and try all over again.

Word of caution! The Peacock Pose is not recommended for women as it is a difficult posture to attain. In Mayurasana you actually raise the body on your wrists and if the balance gets even slightly disturbed, there is an obvious risk of falling and hurting one of the most sensitive parts of your body, your nose. Therefore, you have to be very careful about doing this pose. Taking help of a yoga trainer is obviously recommended.
