The Easy Pose or Sukhasana |
This pose is true to its name. But this has an excellent hidden agenda as well. This agenda stands to benefit your body and mind both, immensely. Nevertheless, it is supposed to be a good pose for the beginners of yoga. It is simple, cross-legged pose. Apart from one of the asanas of yoga, it is the well accepted pose for meditation and pranayama or the breathing exercises.
As a physical exercise it is a very simple posture. Just sit cross-legged and you are in the Sukhasana pose. In order to make the pose perfect, here are some additional hints.
1. You are expected to sit with an erect spine. Place your folded right foot under your left thigh and the left foot under your right thigh.
2. Your hands are on your knees now and palms facing upwards. Remember, the purpose of any asana is not to strain your body unless there is a reason. It is for the comfort of your body and to increase its strength in an amiable way. It is perfectly okay if you sit on a blanket or use a cushion. Let there be no strain for your lower back as well.
In Yoga asanas, difficult things are made easy, and some easy options look difficult. But the final goal is to find the evenness of body, mind and the human spirit. Part benefit is no benefit. Only complete benefit from all the three aspects of body, mind and spirit is the optimum benefit. This is the ultimate goal of any yoga asana.
There are some astounding benefits, if you practice Sukhasana regularly. Some of them are:
1. It is an accepted pose for meditation. You can sit for long hours in this pose, without any physical discomfort. There are instances, where the yogis have sat in this pose for years together, immersed in meditation.
2. You get a better, disciplined posture. You are able to maintain a straight spinal position. Good posture has a long term positive effect.
3. Your neck and spinal muscles are strengthened.
When I say that this is the accepted pose for meditation, this pose must have the elements of spiritual advantages. When you meditate, you introspect and watch your breathing. This pose is the base to lead you to the flights of higher consciousness. The literal meaning of Sukhasana is that you are sitting in a comfortable poise. But this is the launching pad for the real Sukha or the ultimate happiness.
This pose is the watcher's joy. It provides immense benefit to the doer. |
