Shashanka is Sanskrit for the word moon. It is the pose of the moon. The other meaning of Shashanka is hare. It is the opposite of Ushtrasana. These two asanas are done one after the other, so that the body movement is complete. This asana is meant to provide rest and relaxation to the body. The various moods of the mind are linked to the moon and this pose is thus said to benefit both, the mind and the body.
How to do the Yogic moon pose? * Sit down in the Vajrasana pose. As in every yoga pose, keep the waist and the neck straight and erect. * Begin to inhale slowly and as you inhale, raise the arms together over the head as much as you can. * Let the arms remain close to your ears. Make sure that you are sitting in a comfortable position, as otherwise you will not be able to complete the asana in a comfortable manner. * Exhale, slowly stretch the hands and bend forwards, with your buttocks firmly in position. Relax your arms as much as you can and let the elbows rest on the floor. * Your forehead needs to touch the ground, though in the initial stages, it may not be possible. * Breathe normally. Remain in this position, for as long as you can. * Stretch the arms and return slowly to the Vajrasana position.
