* It strengthens your shoulders as well.
* It increases your ability to balance your body.

How to do Scorpion Pose or Vrschikasana?

Step 1: Sit on your knees on the floor. Bring out your arms in front of you and put your forearms flat on the floor.

Step 2: Bend your upper arm in order to make a ninety-degree angle between your fore and upper arm.

Step 3: Start walking towards your hands.

Step 4: By attempting to kick your torso up with your legs, try to stand in an inverted position. Once up, attempt to balance the weight of your body only on your forearms.

Step 5: Once in the inverted position, attempt to look forward and straight. At the same time, try to bring your legs over your shoulders and forward. It might be possible that your knees get separated. However, attempt to touch your toes together.

Step 6: Remain in the position for as long as you feel comfortable. Slowly retrace your steps backwards to come out of the pose.

A word of caution!

The pose is not to be performed if you are suffering from the following conditions:

* Any type of arm injury.
* Shoulder injury.
* Neck injury.

Use of props

Standing inverted on forearms might not come easy for beginners. Hence, they can make use of a prop. A wall would be the best prop to be used in this type of a pose.

The forearms would be the body part that would support most of the body weight. Hence, unless one has really strong and muscular forearms, it is best that a prop is used. A folded blanket would be the best way to spread the tension which would be created in the forearms.

Should women do it during the course of menstruation?

It is perceived that Scorpion and other inverted yoga asanas have a negative impact on women who are undergoing menstruation cycles. However, there is no specific evidence that points at the Scorpion yoga pose affecting a woman's health.

Despite that women yoga practitioners tend to avoid performing this and other similar type of inverted yoga poses. The main reason cited is that it eases the strain on an already strained body. Medical science, though, does not indicate any negative effects of the yoga pose.
