We all breathe 24X7. But, do we do it right? May be not! There are several poor breathing habits that are followed by numerous people. Here are some of the most common poor breathing habits.
Upper chest breathing This technique will help you figure out whether you are a chest breather or not. Simply lie down on the floor or bed. Now place one hand on the upper chest and the other on the abdomen. As you breathe, try to keep a track of the movement of your hands. If the hand that you have placed on your chest moves as you breathe and the other hand remain constant, then you definitely breathe with your chest. This movement of hand indicates inefficient breathing.
Shallow breathing There are many people who face the problem of shallow breathing. To find out if you too are a shallow breather, lie down on your back. Place your hand on your ribs and notice the movement of your ribs as you breathe. Ideally, your lower ribs should expand when you inhale and slightly recoil as you exhale. However, if there is no much movement in your ribs then you are definitely a shallow breather.
Over breathing There are some people who breathe excessively. This means that they inhale more than they exhale. Comparing the length of your inhalation and exhalation will prove to be of great help in find down if you are an over breather.
Lie down and let your breathing come to the relaxed position. Now count the time of your exhalation and the following inhalation. Ideally, the exhalation should be slightly longer than the inhalation. If not, then you are an over breather. For accurate results, it is better if you could have someone else to time your breathing.
Breath holding Yet another poor breathing habit is breath holding. There are so many people who hold their breath before they exhale. In order to ascertain if you too suffer from this habit, concentrate on your breathing. If you too are a breath holder then you would find yourself trying to initiate exhalation.
Reverse breathing Reverse breathing is another poor breathing habit. This habit is primarily a result of exertion. Lie down on your back. Ideally, the abdomen flattens when you breathe in and rises slightly when you breathe out. If the reverse happens, then you are a reverse breather.
Mouth breathing Now this is one of the most common poor breathing habits. There are so many people who breathe from the mouth instead of their nose. You can easily figure out by taking note of your breathing suddenly.
